ASSIGNMENT 8 (Due April 7)
PART ONE – Production Revision
Review the book product from Lulu.com as a group. Note any changes or adjustments that are needed – this can include design updates as well as technical or printer limitations that need improvement.
For example:
• Do colors match correctly (compare with Pantone chips)? This may be necessary for projects where CMYK is a design element.
• Are blacks dark enough? (Rich black can include K=100% + C=40%, M=30%, Y=30%)
• Image resolution OK?
• Printer cropping – confirm that the printer tolerances are ok (design may need to be adjusted relative to their capabilities)
• Fonts loaded correctly
Each group will present their Lulu publication with all of the comments and clarify ways to address the concerns.
PART TWO – Additional Design & Packaging
How does the Lulu production work in terms of a "Client Project" and "Dream Project"? For example you may get the book back from Lulu and decide that by adding a hard cover and/or book jacket (hand made w/ local printing) it becomes more presentable for the Client. You will also address how this works for your Dream publication (with more elaborate packaging like boxes or added print features like transparencies). You may decide that the Lulu book is too small and some alternate printing method is needed. In which case, you will define this and explain how you'll produce the final project.
PART THREE – Production Schedule
With the information from Part 1 and 2 you will outline the way your whole publication will come together, each team member's role to get this done, and a timeframe / schedule.
Consider both versions: CLIENT PROJECT and DREAM PROJECT
Your group will explain the production design of each version – how they are related and where they are different, and the the specific tasks each person is doing.
Example: Ceasar is screen-printing the cover of the book at the Printing Dept on Sat from 9am - 9pm. His tests will include very large printing format for the Dream version as well as 8.5 x 11 tests for the Client piece. The group will review his results on Sun at brunch. This is being posted on the blog for class presentation as his part of the workload. Petunia is preparing two layouts of type treatment using font A and font B with dummy text and will also develop the cover type treatment with 3 variations for both the Client and the Dream publications. She will stop by the print lab where screen-printing is done to review colors that will be incorporated into her type treatments. She is also receiving paper samples from Company XYZ which can deliver 24 x 36 sheets within 4 days of ordering. Rex is laying out the images as the group has agreed upon, taking into consideration how the Lulu book printed. He is setting up two variations of the cropped/bleed technique and is test printing these with a local printer that he started to discuss pricing with for poster sized prints. After the group agrees on type, printing and layouts, Rex is preparing the document for Lulu and the local printer and will be point person for production follow up.
The FINAL TWO PUBLICATIONS (CLIENT and DREAM) are due MAY 5.
Bring prototypes into class. Post photos, sample layouts on the class blog. Be sure to post your work on the blog BEFORE class.
