Amy Kiska-The Girl Project Research

"What are the girls trying to say?"

When I was thinking about this project those were the words that stuck in my mind. I immediately went to the images and looked through them for a long time to try to get a sense of why they were shooting the things they were shooting. When I wasn't exactly sure, I went to the questionnaires. I printed them all out and went through them one by one. It was during this process that I actually felt the power of their words, and I knew that I wanted to include the text from the questionnaires somehow. While the images themselves are extremely powerful, I think the text that supports them (and the girls) is extremely important as well, and really gives the reader a sense of what the Girl Project is. So I decided to try something that incorporated what the girls wrote & what they shot. For me, this made the project more personal than it would be if it were just the images.
