COURSE DESCRIPTION:
THIS COURSE IS FOR STUDENTS WHO ARE INTERESTED IN ‘CREATIVE DIRECTION’ (OR DIRECTING CREATIVE CONTENT) FOR PUBLICATION. ALL FORMS OF DESIGN, INCLUDING LOGOS, AD CAMPAIGNS, EDITORIAL SPREADS, PACKAGING, PRODUCTS AND RETAIL ENVIRONMENT CONVEY SOME PART OF A LARGER ‘STORY’. DURING THE COURSE OF THE SEMESTER, WE WILL DISCUSS THE IMPORTANCE OF ‘STORY’ IN VARIED DESIGN FORMATS. STUDENTS WILL PARTICIPATE IN WEEKLY ASSIGNMENTS AND GROUP CRITIQUES. AN EMPHASIS WILL BE PLACED ON USING PERSONAL INTERESTS AND POINT OF VIEW TO DRAW A THREAD FROM ONE ASSIGNMENT TO THE NEXT.
THE FIRST PART OF THE SEMESTER WILL BE SPENT DEVELOPING EFFECTIVE WORK BASED ON STUDENT’S PERSONAL INTERESTS. THE SECOND PART WILL FOCUS THAT WORK TOWARD THE REAL-LIFE SCENARIO OF WORKING WITH A CLIENT. STUDENTS WILL ALSO EXPERIENCE PROFESSIONAL DESIGN STUDIO / GROUP WORK.
TECHNIQUES FOR RESEARCH, EDITING, REVISING, DESIGN CONTINUITY, AND PRESENTATION WILL ALL BE COVERED, WITH FOCUS ON EACH STUDENT’S PERSONAL IMPROVEMENT. STUDENTS ARE REQUIRED TO UTILIZE RESEARCH AND PRESENT IN A PROFESSIONAL MANNER FOR EACH CRITIQUE. AS THE SEMESTER CONTINUES, INDIVIDUAL EFFORTS WILL BE DIRECTED TOWARD A FINAL GROUP PROJECT OF CREATING ONE FINISHED PUBLICATION.
